Corrupt User Profile

Issues:

  • User gets various c:\Users\user name\AppData pop-up messages being read-only or not having permission
  • Cannot remote into user. User gets a message: "There was a problem starting Remote Assistance. Remote Assistance is unavailable for the current user account. If you are using a Windows Guest account try logging in with another account. If you are using a Guest account, try restarting your machine."

Resolution:

  1. Remote Desktop to PC and log on with elevated rights
  2. Go to C:\Users and delete the Temp folder
  3. Go to regedit - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
  4. Delete the Temp profile and find the users profile with name .bak
  5. Right-click, select Rename and delete the .bak
  6. Close all windows and restart the PC.
  7. Have the user log on and re-establish the users default printer

If the user still has issues logging in recreate the users profile

  • Recreate user profile
    1. Copy anything the user may have saved on their desktop to their U drive
    2. Have user log off and you log on
    3. delete users account
    4. Regedit - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
    5. Delete users profile
    6. Log off and have user log on
    7. Set the users new profile up (default printer, items from desktop, etc)
Choose files or drag and drop files
